Poker is a card game for two or more players. It can be played with a standard pack of 52 cards plus one joker, but the joker counts only as a wild card and cannot be used to complete a straight or a flush. The game may be played with a fixed number of chips for each deal or, more commonly, with a variable number of chips. A “pot” is formed each betting interval, or round, when a player places into the pot the number of chips required by the rules of the specific variant being played.

Players must carefully weigh the odds of a particular hand when deciding whether to call or raise. If the odds are rapidly diminishing, a player may choose to fold rather than continue playing in hope of improving a bad hand. Just says that this ability to weight risks is a valuable skill in poker and in life: It allows people to get more out of their careers or other hobbies than they might have expected, even if they don’t achieve the highest results.

In the case of a single player, the pot is awarded when the hand is revealed at the end of the final betting round. In the case of multiple players, a showdown occurs where all hands are revealed and the player with the best hand takes the entire pot. This is known as the “showdown” or “showdown pot”. In some games, a special fund called the kitty (or pot) is established for chips that are not won in the course of a betting interval. The kitty is shared equally among the players and can be used to pay for new decks of cards, food and drink, etc.
