Security is a high priority in most casinos, and each game is supervised by a pit boss or other supervisor. Dealers are trained to spot blatant cheating techniques, such as palming or marking cards. Similarly, pit bosses and table managers keep an eye on the patrons at each game to ensure that players aren’t stealing from other tables or taking advantage of weak rules. In more technologically advanced casinos, each game is monitored by video cameras.

In games that involve skill, the house edge can be reduced to nearly zero by using an optimal strategy, but this is not foolproof and requires extensive knowledge of mathematics and statistics. Nevertheless, the mathematical expectation of winning for any given casino patron is nearly always positive. For this reason, most casinos offer big bettors extravagant inducements in the form of free spectacular entertainment, hotel rooms and/or limousine service and airline tickets.
